Audi A2 Returns After 21 Years: New A2 e-tron Offers 646 KM Range

The Audi A2 is making a comeback after 21 years, returning as the fully electric A2 e-tron. Unveiled in September 2026, the new compact electric car offers up to 646 kilometres (401 miles) of WLTP range, exceptionally low energy consumption and a starting price of €38,200 in Germany.

Orders opened across selected European markets in September, with the first customer deliveries scheduled for December 2026.

The A2 e-tron also made an appearance at the Paris Motor Show in October, while an Austrian promotional tour is scheduled to take place between 27 October and 14 November.

Why Has Audi Brought Back the A2?

The original Audi A2 was unveiled in 1999 and entered production in 2000. It was one of the most technically unusual compact cars of its time, featuring a lightweight aluminium body and an aerodynamic design focused on reducing fuel consumption.

The particularly efficient Audi A2 1.2 TDI became famous for its ability to achieve fuel consumption of approximately 3 litres per 100 kilometres under official testing conditions.

Despite its innovative engineering, the original A2 struggled to achieve the sales volumes Audi had hoped for. Production ended in 2005 after approximately 176,377 vehicles had been built.

The new A2 e-tron is not a direct mechanical successor to the original car.

Instead, Audi is reviving the same fundamental philosophy: a compact exterior, a spacious interior and exceptional efficiency, this time using modern electric vehicle technology.

The new A2 e-tron has been developed as a rear-wheel-drive electric car, offering four power outputs and three battery capacities.

Version Battery (gross) WLTP range 0–100 km/h
170 PS (125 kW) 52 kWh 423 km 8.8 s
190 PS (140 kW) 61 kWh 515 km 7.9 s
231 PS (170 kW) 84 kWh 646 km 7.0 s
326 PS (240 kW) 84 kWh 630 km 5.7 s

The most powerful version produces 326 PS and 545 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.7 seconds before reaching a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph).

Audi has adopted two different battery chemistries across the range.

The smaller 52 kWh and 61 kWh batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, arranged in a Cell-to-Pack architecture. This design integrates the cells directly into the battery housing, improving packaging efficiency.

The larger 84 kWh battery uses nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry and is available with the 231 PS and 326 PS powertrains.

The different battery technologies allow Audi to balance cost, efficiency, driving range and performance across the model range.

The Most Efficient Production Audi Ever

One of the A2 e-tron's most significant achievements is its remarkably low claimed energy consumption.

According to Audi, the 190 PS version equipped with the optional efficiency package consumes just 12.8 kWh/100 km under WLTP testing.

That makes it the most energy-efficient series-production Audi announced by the manufacturer.

The compact electric car also achieves a drag coefficient of 0.24 Cd, an important contribution to its low energy consumption.

Several aerodynamic improvements work together to reduce drag, including active cooling-air intakes, a largely enclosed underbody, specially developed aerodynamic wheels and optimised airflow around the wheel arches.

However, there is an important distinction: the lowest energy consumption figure of 12.8 kWh/100 km and the maximum 646 km driving range are achieved by different versions.

The longest-range model is the 231 PS variant equipped with the larger 84 kWh battery.

Charging Times: Up to 183 kW DC and Bidirectional Charging

DC fast-charging performance varies depending on the battery fitted to the A2 e-tron.

Battery Maximum DC charging 10–80% charging time
52 kWh 100 kW 24 minutes
61 kWh 105 kW 26 minutes
84 kWh 183 kW 29 minutes

The larger battery supports charging speeds of up to 183 kW, while the smaller LFP batteries have lower peak charging capacities.

The A2 e-tron also offers optional bidirectional charging, allowing the vehicle's battery to supply electricity rather than simply receive it.

With Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, owners can power external equipment such as electric bicycles, camping accessories or tools.

The Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) system goes a step further, allowing energy stored in the vehicle's battery to be supplied to a household through a compatible DC wallbox.

Audi initially announced V2H availability for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, subject to compatible equipment and the relevant operating conditions.

Interior Technology: AI Assistant and Digital Cockpit

Audi A2 e-tron interior featuring a digital instrument cluster, central MMI touchscreen and steering wheel.

The new Audi A2 e-tron features an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen.

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the A2 e-tron has been designed to provide generous interior space.

A 2.77-metre wheelbase helps maximise passenger accommodation, while the interior features a modern digital layout.

Standard equipment includes an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus and a 12.8-inch MMI touchscreen, integrated into a curved panoramic display arrangement.

The infotainment system features the AI-powered Audi Assistant, an electric vehicle route planner and a range of connected services.

Other equipment includes adaptive cruise control, a reversing camera, parking assistance and various driver assistance technologies.

One of the more unusual features is the Fidlock fastening system, which combines magnetic and mechanical locking technology.

This allows accessories such as cup holders and charging cable bags to be securely attached to dedicated mounting points inside the cabin.

Additional options include a 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof and a 14-speaker Sonos premium sound system.

Audi has also incorporated recycled materials into numerous interior and structural components, reflecting the manufacturer's focus on more efficient production and material use.

How Much Does the Audi A2 e-tron Cost?

Audi has announced official German prices for all four powertrain versions.

Version Price in Germany
A2 e-tron 170 PS €38,200
A2 e-tron 190 PS €41,900
A2 e-tron 231 PS €48,900
A2 e-tron 326 PS €51,200

The entry-level model therefore starts at €38,200 in Germany, although buyers seeking the maximum 646 km range will need the considerably more expensive 231 PS version.

In Austria, the starting price has been announced at €36,600.

A promotional discount of €2,500 for eligible private customers can reduce the Austrian entry price to €34,100 under the applicable campaign conditions.

Order books opened on 10 September 2026, with first customer deliveries expected in December.

The new electric model is manufactured at Audi's Ingolstadt plant in Germany, where the company is reusing existing production equipment and manufacturing infrastructure.

Will the Audi A2 e-tron Be Sold in the UK and Türkiye?

The A2 e-tron has been developed specifically for European customers, with Germany and Austria among the first markets to announce pricing and availability.

However, as of 24 October 2026, confirmed UK pricing and a specific British market launch date have not been established in the official information reviewed for this article.

Similarly, Audi has not yet announced an official Turkish launch date or retail price for the A2 e-tron.

Any eventual pricing in these markets will depend on local taxation, equipment specifications, exchange rates and market-specific commercial decisions.

A Modern Electric Successor to the Original A2 Philosophy

What makes the new Audi A2 e-tron particularly interesting is not simply its maximum driving range.

Instead, the combination of a compact body, efficient electric powertrains, different battery chemistries and bidirectional charging technology represents a modern interpretation of the original A2's engineering philosophy.

Audi is also attempting to bring premium technology into a smaller, more affordable electric vehicle without abandoning its focus on efficiency.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer's quoted driving ranges and energy consumption figures are based on WLTP testing.

Independent road tests and early customer experiences will ultimately determine how efficiently the new A2 e-tron performs in everyday driving, particularly in colder weather and during longer motorway journeys.
